Tokenization & Crypto Glossary

A comprehensive reference for terms used in tokenization, real-world asset investment, and blockchain technology.

A

AML (Anti-Money Laundering)

Regulatory framework requiring financial institutions to detect and prevent money laundering activities through identity verification, transaction monitoring, and reporting.

Asset Tokenization

The process of converting ownership rights in a physical or financial asset into digital tokens on a blockchain, enabling fractional ownership and transferability.

Asset-Backed Token

A digital token whose value is derived from and secured by a physical underlying asset such as gold, copper, real estate, or infrastructure. Unlike speculative cryptocurrencies, asset-backed tokens have intrinsic value tied to verifiable reserves.

B

Blockchain

A distributed, immutable digital ledger that records transactions across a network of computers, ensuring transparency, security, and tamper-resistance.

Blockchain Token

A digital unit recorded on a blockchain that represents ownership, value, or rights. In the context of cryptocurrency and tokenization, a blockchain token can represent anything from a fraction of physical gold to voting rights in a protocol. Tokens are created through smart contracts and transferred between wallets.

C

Commodity Token

A digital token backed by and representing ownership of a physical commodity such as gold, copper, oil, or other raw materials.

Compliance

The adherence to laws, regulations, and internal policies governing financial activities. In tokenized asset markets, compliance includes KYC/AML verification, securities regulations, and jurisdictional requirements.

Crypto Token

A digital asset created on an existing blockchain (such as Ethereum) that represents value, utility, or ownership. Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ether (which are native to their blockchains), crypto tokens are built on top of existing networks using standards like ERC-20.

Custodian

An entity responsible for securely storing and safeguarding assets on behalf of investors, providing physical or digital custody services.

D

DeFi (Decentralized Finance)

Financial services built on blockchain networks that operate without traditional intermediaries like banks or brokerages.

Digital Token

A digital representation of value, ownership, or rights stored on a blockchain. A digital token can represent fractional ownership of physical gold, a share in a real estate property, or governance rights in a protocol.

Due Diligence

The investigation and verification process conducted before making an investment. For tokenized assets, due diligence includes reviewing white papers, audit reports, SPV documentation, reserve verification, and legal structures.

E

E-E-A-T

Google's quality framework evaluating Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness of content creators. Financial content, including tokenization and investment content, requires high E-E-A-T standards.

ERC-20

A technical standard for creating tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. An ERC-20 token is a digital token that follows this standard, ensuring compatibility with Ethereum wallets, exchanges, and smart contracts. Many tokenized assets, including gold-backed tokens like PAXG, are ERC-20 tokens.

Escrow

A financial arrangement where a third party holds and regulates funds until contractual conditions are met, providing security for both parties in a transaction.

F

Fiat Currency

Government-issued currency not backed by a physical commodity (e.g., USD, EUR, GBP). Tokenized assets can be purchased with fiat currency through regulated platforms.

Fractional Ownership

An investment model where multiple investors collectively own shares of a single asset, with each investor's share proportional to their investment.

Fungible Token

A token that is identical and interchangeable with every other token of the same type. ERC-20 tokens are fungible by design, meaning one token has the same value and rights as any other token of the same type.

G

Gas Fee

A transaction fee paid to blockchain network validators for processing and confirming transactions. Gas fees vary by network congestion and the blockchain used.

Gold Stablecoin

A cryptocurrency token pegged to the price of gold, with each token backed by physical gold reserves. Unlike USD stablecoins, gold stablecoins track gold's value and function as a tokenized currency anchored to the precious metal.

Gold Tokenization

The process of creating digital tokens backed by physical gold reserves, enabling blockchain-based ownership and transfer of gold.

H

Halving

A programmed event in certain blockchain protocols (notably Bitcoin) that reduces the rate of new token creation by 50%. Halvings are designed to control supply and are often associated with price appreciation.

HODL

Crypto community term meaning 'hold on for dear life,' a long-term investment strategy of holding assets through price volatility rather than selling.

I

Immutable

In blockchain context, data that cannot be altered or deleted once recorded. Immutability ensures that ownership records, transaction history, and audit trails for tokenized assets are permanent and tamper-proof.

Inflation Hedge

An asset or strategy that preserves purchasing power when general price levels rise. Gold is historically regarded as one of the strongest inflation hedges due to its scarcity and independence from monetary policy.

K

KYC (Know Your Customer)

A regulatory process requiring financial service providers to verify the identity and suitability of their clients before providing services.

L

LBMA (London Bullion Market Association)

The international trade association representing the global wholesale gold and silver market. LBMA Good Delivery standards certify gold purity and quality.

Liquidity

The ease with which an asset can be converted to cash or traded without significantly affecting its price.

M

Market Capitalization

The total value of all outstanding tokens or shares, calculated by multiplying the current price by the total supply.

Minting

The process of creating new tokens on a blockchain. Minting tokenized assets involves generating digital tokens that correspond to verified physical reserves.

N

NFT (Non-Fungible Token)

A unique digital token that represents ownership of a specific item such as artwork, a collectible, or a document. Unlike fungible tokens where every token is identical, each NFT is unique.

Node

A computer participating in a blockchain network that validates transactions and maintains a copy of the ledger.

O

On-Chain

Data or transactions recorded directly on a blockchain ledger. On-chain verification means ownership records and transaction history are publicly auditable and immutable.

Oracle

A service that provides external off-chain data to smart contracts on a blockchain. In tokenized assets, oracles may feed commodity prices, audit results, or reserve verification data to smart contracts.

P

Paxos Gold (PAXG)

A gold-backed cryptocurrency token created by Paxos Trust Company, with each token backed by one troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold. PAXG is an ERC-20 token and one of the leading tokenized gold products.

Private Market

Participation markets outside of public stock exchanges. Private markets include private equity, venture capital, infrastructure, real estate, and commodity investments. Tokenization enables broader access to private market assets through fractional ownership.

Proof of Reserve

A verification mechanism that proves a custodian or platform holds the assets they claim to back their tokens, typically through independent audits.

R

RAKICC

Ras Al Khaimah International Corporate Centre, a corporate registry in the UAE under which Cireta's SPVs are incorporated and licensed.

RWA (Real-World Asset)

A physical, tangible asset such as real estate, commodities, or infrastructure that can be represented as digital tokens on a blockchain.

S

Smart Contract

Self-executing code on a blockchain that automatically enforces the terms of an agreement when predefined conditions are met.

SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle)

A legally separate entity created to hold and manage specific assets, isolating them from the parent company's balance sheet to protect investors.
